COCA-COLA China yesterday launched a fully recyclable plastic beverage bottle for its Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta drinks in China as the company tries to promote sustainable packaging.
With 30 percent of its material made from sugarcane, the PlantBottle will help the company cut its reliance on non-renewable resources and reduce potential carbon emissions.
"We are excited to be the first to introduce the cutting-edge packaging technology here for Chinese consumers to experience low-carbon life while enjoying our sparkling drinks," said David G. Brooks, president of Coca-Cola China and Korea.
The new PlantBottle will first launched in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Tianjin as well as Liaoning Province.
The bottle's introduction may raise the company's cost by 5-10 percent but it will not raise prices of its products, according to Brooks.
The company plans to replace all plastic bottles with PlantBottle by 2020 in China.
Coca-Cola has introduced more than 14 billion PlantBottles in more than 24 countries and regions since 2009.
